INTRODUCTION
CPO HANSER SERVICE’S challenge was to make the 30th Anniversary of the European Congress of Pathology (ECP) a great success in an unfamiliar congress destination. The host City was Bilbao, Spain – a relatively small city with not a lot of flight connections, so we thought that registration figures might be lower than in the previous years.
Bilbao is not widely renowned internationally as a congress city. The congress centre is beautiful, an architectural masterpiece, but feels like Hogwarts (and looks like it from the outside, too) – which makes it a bit difficult to find one’s way around.

WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF PATHOLOGY?
The European Society of Pathology (ESP) is a leading force in European pathology.
As a learned society, the ESP has as its primary aim the promotion of high quality diagnostic practice, applied and translational research and under- and postgraduate education in the field of human pathology. This is achieved through its congresses, its journal Virchows Archiv, its European School of Pathology which organises a variety of postgraduate courses and its quality assurance projects in diagnostic molecular pathology.

Foyer exhibition
CPO arranged an exhibition of all previous congresses and its themes with selected posters and documents in the registration area, which was very well frequented.
Anniversary branding
A selection of special giveaways and printed materials were produced for the 30th anniversary.
Highlighting anniversary
Various 30th anniversary speeches were held in the Opening Ceremony to mark the special industry milestone.
Landmark location
The Welcome Reception and guests of the President’s Dinner enjoyed an outstanding evening at the impressive Guggenheim Museum.
