Ortra Overcomes Challenges to Deliver INTERSPEECH 2024: A Global Success

In a remarkable journey of perseverance and adaptability, Ortra successfully organized the prestigious INTERSPEECH 2024 conference, bringing together over 1,700 participants from 51 countries despite facing unprecedented challenges.

In 2018, two leading professors in the field of language processing, Itshak Lapidot of Afeka Academic College of Engineering and Sharon Gannot of Bar-Ilan University, joined forces with the Jerusalem Conference Bureau to bid for the opportunity to host INTERSPEECH in Jerusalem. Although their initial attempt to secure the 2023 conference was unsuccessful, Ortra’s persistence paid off when Jerusalem was chosen to host INTERSPEECH 2024.

Ortra’s marketing efforts were key in promoting Jerusalem as an attractive and unique destination for participants, and preparations were well underway. However, following the events of October 2023, the conference had to be relocated for safety reasons. Ortra’s team acted swiftly, selecting Kos, Greece, as the new venue and partnering with AFEA Congress to ensure the event’s success.

The conference featured 1,031 accepted papers, 106 technical sessions, and four keynote speakers. Attendees engaged in lively discussions, networking, and social events that celebrated Greek culture, demonstrating the resilience of the organizers and participants alike.

Event Highlights:

  • 1,700 delegates from 51 countries

  • 1,031 accepted papers

  • 7 parallel oral sessions, 8 poster sessions, 106 technical sessions

  • 1,500 app users

Despite the challenges, INTERSPEECH 2024 was a resounding success, reaffirming its position as the world’s leading conference on spoken language processing. Ortra’s ability to adapt and deliver a world-class event underscores the strength of collaboration and commitment to excellence.
